Gears of War 3 Beta Impressions + Beta Giveaway! [UPDATED]
Most of you have probably poured countless hours into the Gears of War 3 Beta by now. If not, well than you should be because the Gears of War 3 Beta is sick as hell. Continue reading to see my views on how Epic Games have handled Gears of War 3 and your chance to win a Gears of War 3 Beta code so you can get in on the action as well.
If you ever played the Gears of War series you should know what to expect from Epic Games when it comes to Gears of War 3. Tons of blood, guts, chainsaw duels, shotgun battles, you name it, and Gears of War 3 takes it to the next level. The beta currently offers 3 games modes, Team Death Match, King of the Hill, and Capture the Leader. Team Death Match isn’t just your standard TDM. Each team starts with 15 lives and when those deplete, you are left with 5 men/women standing until the enemy team is eliminated. King of the Hill is basically Annex from Gears of War 2, but Capture the Leader adds a new twist to the gameplay. Instead of “Capture The Meatshield”, one player on your team is the Meatshield -Leader-. As the leader you can use the new Tac Com implemented into Gears of War 3 to see where all your teammates are located, as well as the enemies. The enemy team must capture you for a set amount of time to win the round, however as the Leader you can struggle by tapping B to give your teammates a chance to break you free by killing the opponent , or throwing a smoke grenade at their feet. While their isn’t many game modes to choose from, the nice selection of 4 maps Epic Games have provided with the Beta insures you don’t get bored with your testing time.
Checkout (Seen Above), Trenches, Thrashball, and Old Town are the 4 maps you will get to unleash your havoc on. My personal favorite map is Old Town because it really shows how much an improvement Epic Games have made in the graphics department. Gears of War 3 is a beautiful game without question, the lighting in particular is very impressive. Seeing these improvements on new types of environments to the Gears franchise makes the beta even more enjoyable. Environmental effects have returned from Gears of War 2 as well. On Trenches a thick, nasty sand storm will come through randomly giving you a great opportunity to flank your enemies. Thrashball has a giant scoreboard that over time will start to break and fall half way down, giving players the option to shoot and break the rope bringing it crashing down on their foes. Checkout offers an alarm system, pull the fire alarm and alert everyone on the map. It also opens up a door behind the Photo Center section of the map, which according to Executive Producer Rod Fergusson “Will spawn a “secret” weapon for players”. As of right now it’s only a smoke grenade so it looks like the full game should offer some surprises for gamers.
Probably one of the greatest new additions to Gears of War 3 is the totally kick ass new types of executions. Remember how cool you thought the curb stomp was, or chain sawing an enemy in half? Yea those are for pussies. Epic Games decided to take it a step further. Now when you reach X amount of kills with a certain weapon, you unlock that weapons special execution. The Lancer for example, will end with you shoving the chainsaw into downed enemies chest causing all sorts of blood and guts to fly up onto the screen. It also adds a nice little sound effect to enhance the gruesome effect. Sounds cool right? How about we take that a step further. Someone keeps killing you over and over, and you’re ready to throw your controller across the room. Than you finally down the guy, but you don’t want to just curb stomp or something like that. How about ripping their fucking arm off and beating the hell out of them with it? Yup, and you can continue to beat them repeatably gaining 9 XP for every smack you give them with their own arm. Yea it’s totally fucking sweet.
Epic games have also done a tremendous job at balancing the weapons, and thanks to dedicated servers you don’t have to worry about host advantage either. One reason the Gears of War franchise turned people away was because of the Gnasher. Everyone loves shotgun in Gears, it’s always been that way. However some people can’t stand it. Well no worries, Epic Games’ has your back. Rifles are actually very powerful in Gears of War 3. Which is great because it eliminates the all shotgun gameplay, adding a verity of tactics and gameplay changes. It really makes every match feel different when pairing up with new enemies each game. The newest Rifle, Retro Lancer, is a very powerful weapon. Up close it will destroy a user attempting to rush you, but at a far it will require some good skill. It always features a bayonet, which while holding B will send you into a charge mode where a direct hit on an enemy will lift them straight up in the air giving you the instant kill. Another great addition is the Sawed-Off Shotgun. Dangerous at very close range practically killing multiple enemies instantaneously, but will get you obliterated at a distance.
As I continue to play the Gears of War 3 beta, it makes the wait for September even longer. Epic Games have really shown how well they want to make Gears 3 the most polished Gears come launch time. So far they’re proving it. The Gears of War 3 beta is a beautiful, well polished, masterpiece. Yes, masterpiece. The beta is that fucking good. If you previously were turned away by Gears of War’s all shotgun gameplay, I suggest you give Gears 3 a try.
