Hulu Plus Xbox 360 Impressions

Unless you’re completely unaware of the giant green box under the Video Marketplace, you should know by now Hulu Plus has finally made its way onto Xbox Live.

Hulu Plus is very similar to Netflix in almost every way. From the user interface, browsing movies and show, all the way to searching for what you’re looking for. So Netflix users will feel right at home the second they launch Hulu Plus. Except for one very important thing. Netflix doesn’t suck.

I’ve had nothing but problems with Hulu Plus since I started using it. Half loaded images appear when scrolling through the selections like Popular Episodes. Half the time the images are not even loaded at all forcing me to scroll through a bunch of grey empty boxes with nothing but a small labeling text underneath to read. Once you scroll to the end of a category which offers about 25 different shows/movies to choose from, you get a nice little “Next 25 items” box to click on. Guess what? Nine times out of ten, it doesn’t work. I can click the A button all day long and receive nothing but “Loading….” and a “Boink” noise.

The fun doesn’t stop there either. They have a “All TV + Movies” option to choose from as well. Great right? Wrong. I’ve tried using this option by selecting “TV A-Z”, “TV Genres”, “TV Networks” etc. Every single time I choose to do so, I get that infinite white loading circle stopping the app dead in its tracks, forcing me to hit my guide button to return to the dashboard.

With that said, Hulu Plus isn’t all that bad when it works. It actually streams the videos much faster than Netflix so far from my experience. The problem is finding what you want but when you do, you’re streaming within seconds. Fast forwarding and rewinding work rather well and don’t cause any hiccups or lag. One feature that Netflix has over Hulu Plus is the party feature. It’s always nice hopping into a funny movie with friends laughing it up. Sadly, on Hulu Plus this isn’t possible. One can hope in the future though right?

Overall I was left dissatisfied with Hulu Plus. From the amount of technical problems I encountered, and the poor selection differing itself from Netflix makes me feel Hulu Plus is a waste of time. However, Microsoft have teamed up with Jack Links to provide a week free of Hulu Plus to all Xbox Live Members* for the first week it’s available. Alternatively, if you’re satisfied with Hulu Plus you can visit their website to get a whole month for free. So what are you waiting for? Hit the Video Marketplace on the Xbox 360 Dashboard to download the Hulu Plus App now.

It’s pretty cool & you’ll feel right at home if you used Netflix. Only thing I wish for is a Subscription Blade.

  2. To me these services like hulu and netflix on the xbox are just watered down versions of the ones you can get on your PC, so personally i have no use for them. i suppose if a family have an xbox in their living room and they don’t have a satellite tv box i could see the need for this, but that has to be a real minority of the population, so i dont really see the need in these services on the xbox.

  3. Thanks for the article. Just want to inform all folks who live outside US that Xbox 360 s a great media Player. If you want to access Netflix and other streaming stations on your Xbox 360 you can use UnoTelly as I do to get around the geo block.
